Small (and large) towns and cities in America are dead not because of mega-stores, but because people there no longer want to live in city centres. Contrast this with small towns in France or Germany -- and with towns in England such as Bath or Chichester. Town centres thrive when people live there. They die when people move to the suburbs and then rely on their cars. Beware of simplistic "truisms".

It is now a truism that mega-stores do suck the life-blood from small towns. Look at what Wallmart has done for the USA. I understand that several shops would seriously contemplate closure if the Sainsbury's project goes ahead. This will inevitably have a knock-on effect on all the outlets up the high street. With the decline of our high street we will see the decline of our local community as Malmesbury becomes a ghost town. And this at a time of financial cutbacks when we all are going to have to rely more on each other and indeed be pro-active in strengthening our community.

Plenty of room in Malmesbury town centre for: fashion (men and women), antiques, hardware, books, solicitors, hairdressers, vets, opticians, banks ... and many other trades and outlets that supermarkets either do not supply, or do not do well.

I favour this since it is a brownfield site and currently a bit of an eyesore. And improvements to "Russian Roulette Junction" have been waiting 20 years for some idle council to do something. Malmesbury needs a supermarket so we do not all have to leap into our cars and drive miles every time we want to do a major shop. Malmesbury town centre will have to learn to offer things that supermarkets cannot or do not offer, then the two can live happily side by side.

I am not for supporting this development for the reasons many others feel convinced about. The death of our town centre and a huge housing development.
