Hello, as a regular visitor to WOMAD from 'up North', I regularly come in to the town one or two days out of the five we are there. It's nice to have a proper pint in a pub or a lovely lunch or cuppa. I see quite a few people doing this too, but I can see how locals would avoid coming in for reasons stated above. It doesn't need policing in the same way as Glastonbury or some of the very large events, but when you consider that the event itself 'homes' enough people to be thought of as a mini town in itself, the lack of a significant police presence would be to take a step backwards. You only have to look back at the complaints made after the petty crimes of the 2010 eventto see they are needed. I hope it stays in Malmesbury. Maybe you need a better way to coax people in to the town. It's only a short walk after all.

I have visited Womad, with my family, every year since its move to Malmesbury. We live on the Wirral. We always make a point of getting off site and visting Malmesbury during our stay and have spent a considerable amount of money in local shops, pubs, market, leisure centre etc. We have always found the local people very welcoming. BUT I will not come this year if I am not confident that the site is being policed by real police rather than a bunch of hired heavies. If the site is not policed properly it will become a magnet for organised theives that plagued Womad in its last few years at the Reading site. I will be sending a copy of this posting to both the addresses above.

Yet another negative protectionist argument from one of our town's dynamic retailers. The question is not being asked whether WOMAD aids or hinders local business, it is whether the event merits policing in line with an event like Glastonbury. Retailers have other opportunities which are far more germane to get on their soap box about the issues afflicting business in Malmesbury rather than climb on board every passing band wagon .

Just to balance the argument ............. As a Malmesbury shop owner I couldn't disagree more with the editorial and Jackie Peel. The food shops may benefit from Womad, but to claim that it creates revenue for all the businesses simply isn't true. Since the event moved here my takings for the Womad period are not only significantly down, but also down for the succeeding week, (as I suspect for certain other traders). The town is a ghost town, avoided by other would be shopers because of congestion on the surrounding roads. The event pretty much provides all a festival goer's needs on site so there is very little incentive to leave the site at all. I'm not anti Womad ( I've attended myself in previous years) but we shouldn't get carried away with the idea that it benefits everyone in the town.

I shall be writing straight away in support of keeping WOMAD it is as Malmesbury.com say a brilliant safe family event which provides wonderful entertainment and revue for the traders of Malmesbury. You only have to walk in the High St when WOMAD is on to see the effect it has on the town in many ways. Please support the continuation of this wonderful Festival Malmesbury desparately needs this !
