TOPIC: Malmesbury Commoners

Malmesbury Commoners 1 year, 7 months ago #57

Are you a Malmesbury Commoner?

We would like to dedicate a section on Malmesbury.com to the Malmesbury Commoners, how it all came about and the importance of keeping this legacy alive.

If you know a Malmesbury Commoner or are indeed one of 260 we would love to hear from you.

Ideally, we would like a historical record that we can add to the site along with some interesting pictures, snippets and anecdotes.

No matter how small the amount of info, we think it would make fascinating reading.

Please reply here or email webmaster@malmesbury.com or telephone 01666 826 226.

Just a little something for those who don't know about the Commoners.

The Warden and Freemen of Malmesbury are a unique organisation in which members can trace their roots as far back as King Athelstan.
King athelstan gave the land known as King's Heath or Malmesbury Common to the men of Malmesbury who fought for him against the Danes.
To become a Commoner any person able to trace their ancestry back to those who received land from King Athelstan around 934AD and lives within one and a half miles from the market cross, male or female, married or single and aged over 18 can put themselves forward for commoning.

Hi Craig

What do you know about the history of the Malmesbury Commoners? If you're able to help at all with any info we can use on the site, that would be fantastic - fully accredited to you, of course.

We want to develop a specific area on the site dedicated to the history of the town, which is somewhat lacking at the moment. Thankfully that's the area on the site that's lacking, as opposed to history of the town so it shouldn't be too hard once it starts coming together!

Hope you can help and look forward to hearing from you.
