Local Woods

Take a walk on the wild side and explore the public woodlands in the area.

There are numerous woodlands that can be explored for free near Malmesbury, including The Nymph Hay, The Great Somerford Estate Wood, and Ravensroost Wood.

Ravensroost Wood

Ancient Ravensroost, part of the old royal forest of Braydon has been wooded since the Ice Age. Ravensroost is coppiced as it has been for centuries. The hazel in the south of the wood is coppiced every eight years, allowing sunlight to reach the woodland floor, encouraging wildflowers, butterflies and other insects. Ravensroost Wood is approximately half a mile wide and half a mile long.

The Nymph Hay

The Nymph Hay. A wonderful wood next to a kids playground and a perfect size for a 30 minute wander. Bounded on all sides by traditional walls so very safe for children and dogs. A nice mix of trees and open areas, with a shallow stream running through. Approximately 300 yards wide and 400 yards long.

The Great Somerford Estate

A young woodland with stands of oak, ash and other native species. Located just south of Great Somerford village. Approximately 200 yards squared in size.
