The Tuesday Club (charity No. 1060449)

What is the Malmesbury Tuesday Club?

The Tuesday Club is for residents in Malmesbury and the surrounding areas of North Wiltshire, who feel isolated and in need of a change of scene, companionship, outings and entertainment.

The club meets most Tuesdays in the Malmesbury Leisure Centre between 12.30pm and 3.30pm together with the Organiser and some very committed volunteer helpers.

Who can join the Club?

Anyone who is over 16 and, whose chances of social contact are limited by infirmity, including impairment of sight, hearing or speech, can join the Tuesday Club. We currently provide an essential service to our members, one which represents excellent value for money. Acceptance of applications for membership is at the discretion of the Club Organiser acting on behalf of the management Committee.

Some of the benefits offered by the Club

  • Provision of a service similar to a Day Centre at a fraction of the cost to the Council
  • Members gain companionship, outings, social interaction, and entertainment and they are able to have a say in the Club’s programme of activities.  This keeps them mentally and physically more active, reducing their care needs and the resultant financial burden on the local authority.
  • Family members and carers are given a few hours of welcome respite, thereby supporting and encouraging them to continue looking after loved ones at home and reducing the need for provision of respite care by the local authority.
  • Regular talks giving members information on pension credits, disability and other benefits etc
  • Liaison with Malmesbury school, providing sixth formers with experience of visiting and helping with Tuesday Club meetings, benefiting both Club members and students, and helping the volunteers.
  • Fund raising for other local charities which gives members, who may usually be isolated, a stake in their local area
  • What happens at the Club Meetings?

The detailed arrangements for Club members’ activities are made by the Organiser.

On arrival, members will enjoy a sandwich lunch followed by a session devoted to group quizzes, puzzles or similar “brain teasers” for those who wish to take part. Some meetings will feature a talk by a visiting speaker on a topic of interest. Sometimes members will be able to enjoy a particular craft activity. From time to time a professional tutor will lead a class in Chair Yoga. Members may continue these activities at the club and, perhaps at home. Proceedings are drawn to a close with a weekly raffle with donated prizes.

Getting to and from the Tuesday Club

Members that can’t manage to make their own way to the club can, for a nominal cost, be picked up by car driven by dedicated volunteer drivers.
