Sainsbury's Press release: SAINSBURY’S REFINED PROPOSALS FOR GARDEN CENTRE REGENERATION SUBMITTED
Following a detailed public consultation, Sainsbury’s has submitted a planning application to Wiltshire Council for the redevelopment of Malmesbury Garden Centre. The proposal includes a 30,000 sq ft foodstore, petrol station and three employment units.
Buildbase Ltd a builders merchants currently based on Park Road in Malmesbury, will occupy one of the units.
If the proposal is approved the employment units will support local enterprise and provide Malmesbury residents with a foodstore of appropriate size in which to carry out a full weekly shop. A new roundabout on the A429 is included in the plans.
A number of key changes have been made to the plans in response to feedback received, including:
•A reduction of space for non-food products, from 30% to12% of the sales floor.
•Timber cladding and glazing have been incorporated into the design of the store complementing the surrounding environment.
Ben Littman, Regional Development Executive for Sainsbury’s explains. We have listened to feedback given at our public consultation and made a number of significant changes to the proposal. The final submitted plans reflect the best scheme on the right site for Malmesbury.
The reduction in non-food sales area to 12% of the sales floor was not a decision taken lightly, given that many residents we spoke to wanted to see a good non-food offer in the store. However, in combination with a robust package of measures supporting the town centre, Sainsbury’s believes the store will complement Malmesbury, keep shoppers local and provide the protection for the High Street traders told us they wanted to see.
Once the planning application is registered the reference details and summaries of the final submitted plans will be available on the dedicated project website www.sainsburys-malmesbury.co.uk. Sainsbury’s welcome continued feedback and encourage residents to get in touch either via email This email address is being protected from spambots. Public consultation included a two-day public exhibition and meetings with the Malmesbury and District Chamber of Commerce, a public meeting organised by the Area Board and St Paul Malmesbury Without Parish Council.

Notes to editors
•The proposal includes a 30,000sqft foodstore large enough to carry out a weekly food shop. By way of comparison this is approximately half the size of the Sainsbury’s in Chippenham or the same size as the Tesco in Tetbury once the recently consented extension is built.
•The store proposal also includes a three pump petrol station and customer café.
•The proposal would create much-needed employment opportunities in the local area creating over 200 full and part time jobs through the new store and employment units.
•Sainsbury's is committed to improving the junction layout at the site entrance on the A429 as part of the proposals. This will make travel into north Malmesbury easier and relieve congestion in the town centre.
•The store will help facilitate the wider development of the garden centre site and bring forward further employment units.
