LIDL UK has submitted a planning application for a new store in Malmesbury, located East of the A429 Malmesbury Bypass, opposite Waitrose, the budget supermarket firm has confirmed.

Since first revealing plans for the new store in January, Lidl has shared details of the proposed store with all households across Malmesbury and the surrounding area.

The property team at Lidl has incorporated a number of suggestions made by the community at the public consultation event held earlier in the year to the plans. These include extending the foot and cycle way from the store to the existing B4042 East of the Priory roundabout, and proposals for traffic calming measures along the A429, including the incorporation of declaration markings on the road to the North and South of the site, as well as extending the 30mph zone to the North of the proposed access point.

The supermarket claims to have received more than 1,000 positive responses, with over 1,530 members of the community signing an online petition to support the application.

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, Glen Stidever, said: “We are delighted to announce that we have submitted a planning application to Wiltshire Council and look forward to receiving the decision in due course. If granted this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area, and the creation of new jobs for the local community when the store opens.

"We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and feedback so far and those local residents who were able to attend our public consultation earlier this month.”

The plans describe a sustainable store which will create up to 35 new jobs for the local economy. It will also include amenities such as an in-store bakery, a customer toilet and baby-changing facilities, and parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK hopes a decision will be made on the application in the summer.
