ORGANISERS of Calne's Beat the Street have praised residents for 'stepping up to the plate' and taking part in a giant keep fit challenge.

A total of 3,348 people joined up the five-week programme to explore the town and together they covered over 52,000 miles.

The game first came to Calne in 2015 as part of the Air Quality Initiative and returned from September 15 to October 13.

Beat the Street enables people to earn points, win prizes and discover more about their local area by walking, running and cycling.

To take part, all residents had to do was to pick up a Beat the Street card from Calne Town Council and swipe Beat Boxes as they walked, ran or cycled around their local community.

Calne councillor Glenis Ansell said: "It's been a great success again and Calne has stepped up to the plate with more community groups signing up than usually seen - and a great overall response from our community.

"It’s encouraged people to leave the car at home and get out and about in our beautiful town. The numbers don’t lie.

"It’s encouraged a sense of community as people have met up while collecting points.

3,348 people have joined up and together they’ve covered more than 52,000 miles.

"The game incorporated weekly themes to add excitement and a chance to win extra point. These were; go explore, go travel, go celebrate and go play.

"Alongside the involvement from the people in the community, local business also played their part in providing some fabulous prizes as part of the game. It truly brought out the community spirit.

"We hope to put some legacy activities in place to keep up the momentum - so keep your eye on Calne Town Council’s Facebook site."

School teams can win prizes of up to £350 of book vouchers while community teams can win up to £350 worth of sports and fitness vouchers.
