Concerns have been raised over a planning application that's been submitted by the town clerk at the Town Hall. It is not known whether town councillors were consulted before the application went in for conversion of the community Market Room inside the Town Hall to a commercial hairdressing salon / beauty salon but with eight other hairdresses already in the town, as well as numerous mobile hairdressers and beauty therapists, it's likely to be the cause of significant controversy.

Furthermore, the application comes at a time when a shop in Gloucester Street that used to be The Beauty Retreat has applied for conversion to two flats. Numerous businesses are known to have made enquiries and viewed the premises on Gloucester Street but all were unable to reach agreement on either a purchase or lease. One was also known to have tried to obtain information from Wiltshire Council regarding possible change of use for another commercial purpose but received no reply after several attempts. The Chamber of Commerce has already opposed the application on Gloucester Street on the grounds that the loss of commercial premises should be protected to ensure the long term prosperity of the town but they have yet to comment on the Town Hall application. Concern is expected to be raised over the potential pressure that will be put on existing businesses and whether there are other commercial products or services that could be lacking in the town.
