WOMAD set to be Foodie Heaven in 2014

With WOMAD attracting musicians and revelers from every corner of the globe, the festival naturally welcomes an amazing array of culinary backgrounds, and in 2014 will celebrate this annual fusion of flavours by becoming a foodie heaven in its own right.

Such culinary institutions as the Taste the World Stage and WOMAD’s regular polyethnic range of Food Traders will be joined this year by the brand new Taste the World Restaurant and Children’s Cookery Workshop, all of which will offer an extraordinary dining experience.

The Taste the World Stage offers WOMAD’s performers a chance to display their prowess in the kitchen, and the audience the rare chance to learn about a new culture – culinary and otherwise – in an intimate setting, as well as sampling a rare and exotic new dish.

The live cookery session comes with lively discussion, a party atmosphere and, more often than not, ends with an impromptu gig.

There’s a taste for every palate at the brand new Taste the World Restaurant, which will be curated by local foodie Dave Penfold who will lay a sumptuous spread of local, seasonal, wild and completely natural food from all around the globe, using the very best ethically and, in many dishes, locally sourced ingredients.

As well as the delicious foods, the Taste the World Restaurant will offer wonderfully experiential dining, where family and friends can sample sharing platters of new and exotic dishes from the colourful Bedouin tent in the Arboretum before enjoying a relaxing drink in the wine bar.

As well as offering an eclectic and imaginative range of breakfasts and lunches, the Taste the World Restaurant will introduce foodies to different regional flavours with fun and imaginative feast nights, kicking off with The Spice Route feast on Friday, a multisensory culinary adventure that starts in India, travels through the Arabian Gulf and ends in North Africa, taking in the world of flavours this part of the world has contributed to the collective appetite.

If that doesn’t tingle the taste buds then on Saturday night The Sugar Route feast will celebrate the exquisite range of flavours born of the multifarious Americas. Based on the routes sugar traders would take from vibrant Brazilian cities to sleepy hamlets in the Deep South of the USA, these rich, expressive and pure dishes sing of a life more simple, relaxing and altogether pure.

Meanwhile the next generation of gourmands will be brewing at the Children’s Cookery Workshops. Running every day of the festival, the classes will be run by Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation Ambassador Danny McCubbin. The classes (and the food) will be child-friendly, healthy and fun, and are free of charge, but, as space is limited, the sessions will work on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Danny McCubbin said of the initiative:

"There is no greater joy for me than to see first-hand how learning to cook can be a life enhancing experience for people from all walks of life. Teaching children how to cook is a skill that they will have for the rest of their life and I am looking forward to bringing this important message to WOMAD this year. We aim to inspire and enable those attending to revel in the food of the cultures whose music they will hear at the festival."

Accompanying all of this fantastic foodie entertainment will be WOMAD’s usual all-encompassing foodie fare, taking in the most eclectic, delicious tastes from pole-to-pole for the best festival food experience on the planet.
