Young people in Wiltshire are being encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot their way to school when they return to class next week.

Wiltshire Council says that pupils who live a short distance – two miles or less – should use green alternatives to get to the school gates.

For those car sharing with someone outside of their support bubble, they are advised to share with the same people every time, open windows for ventilation and wear a face mask – unless they are exempt.

Pupils who use public transport are also being reminded to wear face coverings while travelling.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “Where needed Wiltshire Council is adding on additional buses to ensure social distancing can be maintained.

“They will be advising pupils via schools of these plans.”

In line with other local authorities, the council is asking pupils who use buses, taxis or minibuses arranged by the council, to wear a face mask where ever possible.

Other bus users are also being asked to consider taking their bus journey after 9am to help maintain the social distancing on the public buses.

Cllr Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for transport said: “As we near the end of the summer break families are preparing to return to school.

“This year is going to feel different and we provided a number of helpful booklets and advice which we hope families will find useful.

"We have put advice and guidance on our website for those pupils using dedicated school buses and for those who use public transport.

“It is difficult to predict how many school pupils will use public transport at this stage but the council has worked hard to ensure there is enough transportation available and it will be monitored as the days go forward.”
