sue-pooleMy name is SUE POOLE, and I want you to vote for me in the election for MALMESBURY TOWN COUNCIL ON THURSDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2011.

I "came home" to Malmesbury 17 years ago, and care passionately about the wonderful and unique town in which we all live. The character of our town means there can be no easy answers or quick fixes to our modern problems, but I would appreciate the opportunity to work towards a secure and prosperous future for the town.

DEVELOPMENT is obviously one of the most pressing concerns for the town.

HOUSING – We do need some new housing, particularly that which can be afforded by our youngsters trying to get their first foot on the ladder. Young families need to be attracted to and sustained in the town, but this has to be planned very carefully so as not to swamp the infrastructure of the town.

RETAIL – We must sustain a viable and vibrant High Street if the whole town is to thrive. Ways must be found to attract both regular shoppers and visitors to spend money in our local shops and businesses; but we cannot ignore the commercial pressures from the larger supermarkets and retail chains. These need very careful thought and management if we are to turn them to our advantage.

INDUSTRY – If the town is to prosper, we must be able to offer employment. Existing industrial employers must be supported, and, if possible, other appropriate employment needs to be attracted to our area.

I have the time, the energy and the determination, so I hope very much that you will vote for me, and allow me to represent you on our Town Council on 8 September.

BIOGRAPHY: I was born in Cardiff in 1948 and finally "came home" to Malmesbury 17 years ago, having lived all over the UK, in Kenya and Canada.

FAMILY: I married my second husband, John, in 1998 and between us we have 4 adult children and 7 grandchildren ranging in age from 23 to 6 years. Most of them live here in, or very near, Malmesbury.

WORK: I retired from teaching ICT and Sociology at a comprehensive in Cheltenham 3 years ago, where I was also responsible for organising all the school's work experience and industrial links. Since retiring, I have become a volunteer at the museum, as well as caring for my husband who sadly passed away in May. I have also maintained my contact with the education establishment by working as an invigilator at Malmesbury School.

HOBBIES: I have been an active member of the Athelstan Players since 1991, appearing in, or helping with, most of their productions since then. I am secretary to Malmesbury Jazz Society and Clerk to the Warden & Freemen of Malmesbury.

EXPERIENCE: My husband was a Town Councillor right up to his death. Our proudest year was 2006-7 when I was privileged to support my husband in his role as Mayor. He was born and bred in the town and his fierce pride in the place, its character and history has certainly rubbed off on me!

I have already some experience of the workings of the Town Council, and I understand many of the constraints within which it has to work. However, I believe obstacles are there to be overcome when they interfere with what is in the best interests of our community.

I want to continue to work to protect and improve the unique character of our town and sympathetically move forward into the future.
