Buckley Barracks scores highly with cadetsBuckley Barracks proved a big hit with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets from Dorset & Wiltshire Wing, who met there recently for a Sector five-a-side football competition on the excellent Astro turf facilities. This was by kind permission of 9 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps based at the barracks.

Over 50 cadets from six squadrons in the North West Sector competed in three categories (Boys under 16, boys over 16 and girls category) which saw the games played with plenty of passion and sportsmanship with good tackles thrown in for good measure, with the teams from 2196 (Trowbridge) and 1304 (Chippenham) squadrons indicating they could be the ones to win in the future with Trowbridge ending up the overall winners with back to back wins in a penalty shootout.

Cadet Sergeant Adam Baldwin from 2196 (Trowbridge) Squadron said “The day was a huge success with all the members of every team putting their all into every game”.  “Overall it was a very satisfying activity!”

The girls also had a great day with several playing for the first time. Cadet Pip Balshaw from 1304 (Chippenham) Squadron said “I hadn't played football before and never knew it could be so much fun. It was such a great day.”

The competition was run as a friendly ‘taster’ event with a view to having more competitions in the future to run alongside the cadet marksmanship shooting and training days on the range.

Event organiser Flight Lieutenant Mike Toulouse said “The cadets really enjoyed themselves today, and I would on behalf of the cadets and staff, like to thank 9 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps for making this possible by allowing us to use their excellent facilities”.

Wing Staff Officer Squadron Leader Nick Watt RAF VR(T) added “It was great to see so many cadets from across our Sector participating in this competition - we hope the first of many such events.”

This event sees a continuation in the growing relationship between the Royal Air Force Air Cadets of Dorset & Wiltshire Wing and 9 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps and their continued support and commitment to that relationship.
