The Athelstan Players is Malmesbury’s local amateur dramatic group, started over 60 years ago and still going strong today. We are lucky enough to have our own drama studio (opposite the football club behind Co-op), where we rehearse twice a week for the current production, occasionally perform, and once in a while get out the fizzy pop for a good old knees up.
We try to put on at least four productions a year, a Carnival Revue, and a Christmas show, which usually involves everyone and anyone, young and old. Also a full-length play, or music hall, or series of One Act plays. Each year we enter a one act play for the All England One Act Play Festival, where we compete against other local amateur drama groups and usually come away with a trophy or two or three or four!
We are also pleased to be invited to, and happy to entertain at, some of the local retirement homes at Christmas and Easter, and you will often see us with our charity bucket warbling a few carols at the Christmas Late Night Shopping evening in the High Street.
We are always looking for new members to join us and give our audiences some new faces to look at, so if you’ve not had a go since school, come and have a go now! We also welcome anyone with a yearning to direct, pull curtains, sew costumes or shift scenery. There’s always something to do (sense of humour a big asset). And its only £12 a year!!
